Who is phyno?

Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike  (born 9 October 1986), popularly known as Phyno is a Nigerian rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer. He started his music career as a producer in 2003, and is renowned for rapping in the Igbo language. His debut studio album No Guts No Glory was released in 2014. It was supported by four singles: “Ghost Mode”, “Man of the Year”, “Parcel” and “O Set”. Before that he recorded singles like “What are you waiting for” and ” Multiply” featuring M.I, Mr. Raw, Timaya and M.I Phyno has worked with artists such as Olamide, Wizkid, Davido, Timaya, Flavour, Ruggedman, Bracket, J. Martins and Mr Raw.

Where did phyno grow up?

Although a native of Anambra State, Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike was born and raised in Enugu State. He attended the Institute of Management and Technology in Enugu, Nigeria where he studied Public Administration. Thereafter, he moved to Lagos to further promote his music career.

Phyno developed interest in Music Production in secondary school. Then, he started learning how to play piano, drums and how to create his own rendition of every recording he comes across.

He got his stage name through one of his friends in high school, Emeka from the word ‘phenomenal’. Phyno started profiting from music from his second year in the institute. And, in 2010, after school, he started rapping and then relocated to Lagos to pursue his career.

He studied public administration at the Institute of Management and Technology in Enugu, and started profiting from music during his second year there. Phyno told Ifeoma Onoye that Mr Raw is one of the few people he looks up to. Phyno started rapping in 2010 and relocated to Lagos to further his music career.

Phyno Career

While still in high school, Phyno started learning how to play the drums, the piano, and various other instruments. Phyno had already established himself as a musical prodigy before he began college, and he had begun selling his beats to various artists.

He began producing in 2003 and maintained doing so until 2010, when he moved to Lagos State and resumed his production career as both a rapper and producer.

He collaborated with numerous performers, including Flavour, Timaya, J Martin, and Mr. Raw. Because Phyno liked Mr. Raw’s rap style, he had always wanted to collaborate with him. Phyno began work on his debut album, No Guts No Glory, in 2012, but the record wasn’t made public until 2014.

Stormex, Flavour, Timaa, Efa, P-Square, Olamide, N’ábania, Mr. Raw, M.I, Ice Prince, and Runtown were among the artists who appeared on the album.

The album earned a lot of praise, especially for Phyno’s Igbo and Nigerian Pidgin rapping throughout. His passion for uplifting his culture and customs via art is something he feels rapping in his native tongue is a strength of his.

Others in the music industry, like Flavour, Olamide, and Zoro, have taken a similar tack.

The album 2 Kings, which Phyno and Olamide co-wrote, was a tremendous hit on Nigerian radio and received a ton of downloads all over the continent.
