Education is a very vital part of human welfare and existence. Education is the best legacy a country can give to her citizens. It is a human right that should be accorded to all human beings solely by reason of being a human being. The strength of a country is determined by the number of the vast majority that is educated. This is because only educated persons are enlightened and enlightenment leads to national and global development.

Can this be said of a country like Nigeria, where her vast majority are uneducated because of some reasons ranging from one poor funding and neglect of the education to poor governance that has led to the lackadaisical attitude towards the quality of the education given; poor infrastructures and training facilities, poor teacher’s welfare, lack of dedication on the part of teachers, lack of high performers, high level of exam malpractices and a few others not to be mentioned.

It shouldn’t be a thing of shock that research carried out in the United States of America in 2010, recorded that Nigerians are the most educated Immigrants in the world.

Why do they have to leave their mothers land to seek education abroad or overseas?

This question is simple and its causes are as a resultant effect of the problems of education stated in the second paragraph.In the light of this discussion, it suffices that we mention at least a few of the importance of education in Nigeria.

1. ERADICATION OF POVERTY, HUNGER, IGNORANCE, AND ILLITERACY

Restructuring of the educational system in Nigeria would bring about the eradication of poverty, illiteracy, and ignorance in our society. Over time, illiteracy has played an undeniable role in the untamed existence of ignorance. Ignorance of opportunities brings about poverty which gives room to hunger and ill health.

2. GOOD GOVERNANCE AND GENUINE DEMOCRACY

It is no longer news that the rule of law guarantees transparency, credibility and the safety of human rights. Although Nigeria lacks all of the above. However, if education is handled with seriousness, where each and every citizen knows their right, and know what to do when their right is violated.

Then, every citizen can decide who they want in a position of the power by way of exercising their Franchise without any form of coercion or persecution by political aspirant during the elections and as such eradicate corrupt leaders who have nothing good in mind for this country.

3. GOOD STANDARD OF LIVING

With the proper care of Education in Nigeria, it would go a long way to improve the standard of living of the people, by way of providing with adequate social amenities such as good health care system, electricity, pipe borne water, good roads and so on. Without proper education, it would be difficult to improve the standard of living in Nigeria.

4. EQUALITY

If we want to see the world as a just and fair place where everyone is given equal opportunities, education is what we require. Education is a must if we want to do away with the existing differences between different social classes and genders.

It opens a whole world of opportunities for the poor so that they may have an equal shot at well-paying jobs. Education also plays a major role in women empowerment. With proper education, Nigeria would be a country were peace, equity and justice reigns.

5. MAKES YOU SELF DEPENDENT

Education is very important if you want to be a self-dependent person. It helps you become financially independent but that is not all. Education also makes you wiser so that you can make your own decisions.

6. TURNS YOUR DREAM INTO REALITY

What is your dream, your aim in life? Do you want to become rich? Do you want to be popular? Do you want to be an extremely successful person who is respected by people?

Well, the key to all this is education. Of course, there are exceptions, like sportsmen who don’t really owe their success to their education. However, in most cases, your degree is what helps you realize all your dreams.

7. MAKES YOU CONFIDENT

Your educational degree is considered as a proof of your knowledge by many. If you are educated you have more chances of being heard and taken seriously.

Generally, an uneducated man will find it harder to express his views and opinions owning to lack of confidence. Even if he does so, people may not take him seriously. Education gives you the confidence to express your views and opinions.

In fact, in today’s Nigeria, if you don’t attend higher education and acquired the papers, you will not be given a listening ear in most occasions.

8. SOCIETY

We all live in a society which has its own set spoken/unspoken rules and one of them is education. The society expects you to go to school followed by college, get a job, settle down etc.

In fact, education helps you become a useful member of society. An educated member certainly has a greater chance to contribute to his community.

Education helps you become an active member of the society and participate in the ongoing changes and developments. Moreover, if you are not educated then you are considered to be illiterate.

9. FOR ECONOMIC GROWTH OF THE COUNTRY

Australia, USA, and Japan are few countries with very high literacy rates. These countries are extremely prosperous and the citizens have a high per capita income.

On the other hand, in underdeveloped and developing nations, where the literacy rate is not as high, a number of people are still living below the poverty line, example Nigerian.

At this juncture, I can say that There is no country that can do very well without paying attention to the importance of education. Education is vital for the economic prosperity of a nation! These are the few credible importance of Education in Nigeria, with a few more yet to be discussed in this article.
