## WAEC 2020 Physics Practical Questions and Answers

During the Physics Practical Exams, Everything will be provided for you from the Physics Laboratory. Make sure you do not use any device not approved by the exam invigilators. You may be prone to many errors if you fail to adhere to the invigilators and the examination instructions.

a) Diagram

You are provided with three retort stands, a pendulum bob, drawing board, stop-watch and other necessary apparatus. Using the diagram above as a guide, carry out the following instructions:

(i) Fix the drawing paper on the drawing board and hold the board with two clamps such that its vertical.
(ii) Suspend the pendulum bob such that it hangs freely in front of the drawing appear.
(iii) Draw a line RP representing the rest position of the pendulum string and mark the position P of the centre of the pendulum bob at rest.
(iv) Displace the pendulum bob to one side in a plan parallel to the drawing board.
(v) Mark the new position p¹ of the centre of the bob.

(vi) Measure and record the perpendicular distance, d of pi from the line RP.
(vii) Evaluate and record d2
(viii) Measure and record the vertical height h of p¹ above P.
(ix) Evaluate G =d2/h
(x) Repeat the procedure for four other oppositions of p.

(xii) remove the drawing board so that the pendulum bob can swing freely.
(xiii) Set the pendulum bob oscillating through a small amplitude and determine the time t for 20 oscillations.
(xiv) determine and record the period T.
(xv) plot a graph with G on the vertical axis and h on the horizontal axis, starting both axes from the origin (0, 0).
(xvi) Determine the intercept 1 on the horizontal axis.
(xvii) Evaluate A = 1/(19.7)2
(xviii) State two precautions taken to obtain accurate results.

(b) (i) Distinguish between the period and frequency of oscillation of a simple pendulum.
(ii) Differentiate between oscillatory and rotational motions.

QUESTION 2:
a) Diagram

Use the diagram above as a guide to carry out the following experiment.

(i) Trace the outline ABCD of the rectangular glass prism on the drawing paper provided.
(ii) Remove the prism. Select a point N on AB such that AN is about one quarter of AB.
(iii) Draw the normal LNM.  Also draw a line RN to make an angle θ = 75° with AB at N.
(iv) Fix two pins at P1 and P2 on line RN. Replace the prism on its outline.
(v) Fix two other pins at P3 and P4 such that they appear to be in a straight line with the images of the pins at P1and P2 when viewed through the prism from side DC.
(vi) Remove the prism and the pins at P3 and P4 Draw a line to join P3 and P4.
(vii) Produce line P4P3 to meet the line DC at O. Draw a line to join NO.
(viii) Measure and record the values of MO and NO.
(ix) Evaluate ф =  and  cos θ.
(x) Repeat the procedure for four other values of θ – 65°, 55°, 45° and 35°. In each case, evaluate ф and cos θ
(xii) Plot a graph with cos θ on the vertical axis and ф on the horizontal axis.
(xiii) Determine the slope, s, of the graph.
(xiv) Sate two precautions taken to ensure accurate results.

b) (i) State Snell’s law of refraction.
(ii) Calculate the critical angle for the glass prism used in the experiment above if its refractive index is 1.5.

a) Diagram

You are provided with cells, a potentiometer, an ammeter, a voltmeter, a bulb, a key, a jockey and other necessary materials.

(i) Measure and record the emf E of the battery.
(ii) Set-up a circuit as shown in the diagram above.
(iii) Close the key K and use jockey to make a firm contact at J on the potentiometer wire such such that PJ = x = 10 cm.
(iv) Take and record the voltmeter reading  and the corresponding ammeter reading.
(v) Evaluate log V and log I.
(vi) Repeat the procedure for other values of x = 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60cm.
(viii) Plot a graph with log I on the vertical axis and log V on the horizontal axis.
(ix) Determine the slope, s, of the graph.
(x) Determine the intercept, c, on the vertical axis.
(xi) State two precautions taken to ensure accurate results.

b) (i) How is the brightness of the bulb affected as x increases? Give a reason for your answer.
